  1. I am a new resident of Columbus Ohio and a degreed Architect who has a passion for buildings and photography, I have taken several walking tours of Downtown Columbus to view and photograph buildings old and new. The clear afternoon sunlight of a September day was an ideal time to capture the geometry of structures which stand out along the river and the broad avenues of the city. Classical styles of Greece and Rome, Art deco, Post Modernism, Gothic and Romanesque Revival, Mid Century Modern, and Contemporary are represented in the architecture, whose typology appears in other cities, but stands out in a clear and harmonious juxtapostion and layering. The new Main Street Bridge stands out, a canted steel arc secured by tension cables. The bridge acts act not only as a conduit for vehicles, bike riders and pedestrians, it is a new icon which anchors the skyline, like the arch of Saint Louis. New Neighborhoods, such as Neighborhood Launch, the Annex and the Arena, contain buildings which show a love of masonry construction, both brick and stone. Following posts will further documnent and describe the city's architecture, focusing on specific styles, forms, structure, construction.

  6. Gary, Thanks for sharing your photos...what a great way to get to know a city. The clear blue September skies really make the buildings pop (and yes what an interesting garden variety.)
